Color Psychology

Colors are a form of non verbal communication that can speak volumes in a fraction of a second. They can instantly set a mood, convey an emotion, invoke a psychological reaction or inspire people to take action.

When we harness the right color emotion, it can have a powerful effect on our mood and behavior. Certain colors are even considered to be healing for the mind and body.

The psychology of color dates back thousands of years. Over the centuries, it has been proven by various experiments how colors affect the world we live in. Scientists have found that actual psychological changes take place in human beings when they are exposed to certain colors.

The development of modern psychology also opened up the study of color specifically. One prominent researcher in the field was Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung (1875-1961), who is quoted saying:colors are the mother tongue of the subconscious.” His studies led him to develop art therapy, as he believed that expressing oneself through images and colors could help patients recover from trauma or distress. He connected our cultural perceptions with the idea that we have a universal, bodily response to color stimulus.

However, cultural perception can change the meaning of a specific color.

For example in western countries the color white is usually associated with purity, cleanliness and innocence. In India it goes hand in hand with death, mourning and sadness.
